With solemn events and a special visit of the Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel, Varna celebrates today 1160 years since the baptism of the Bulgarian people and 1170 years since the creation of the Bulgarian alphabet.
On the occasion of the anniversaries, the inhabitants of the maritime capital worship the memory of Tsar Boris I Michael – the Baptist, whose historical actions mark the beginning of the Christian era in Bulgarian history. The events surrounding the admission of Christianity, as well as the welcome of the disciples of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, are inextricably linked to the territory of the present -day Northeastern region.
