The case against Ekrem Imamoglu puts Turkey’s political future to the test
In Turkey, a trial begins against the mayor of Istanbul and one of the most prominent figures of the opposition – Ekrem Imamoglu. The case is being followed closely both in the country and by the international community, as it may seriously affect the future presidential elections.
The 55-year-old politician is among the main accused in a large-scale corruption investigation related to the activities of the municipality in Istanbul. There are over 400 defendants in the case, and the charges include corruption and receiving bribes.
Ekrem Imamoglu and his party – the Republican People’s Party – categorically deny the accusations. According to them, the process is political in nature and aims to prevent his participation in future elections against the current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
If convicted, Imamoglu could face a harsh sentence that would potentially sideline him from political life for a long period. Many analysts define the case as a key moment for the political situation in Turkey and for the balance between the rulers and the opposition.
